Canadian Women Told To Shut The EF Up

.....by another Canadian woman, and a senator no less! 88|

Came across this news item on the CBC website:

Conservative Senator Nancy Ruth told a meeting of international women's equality rights groups Monday morning that it would be best for them to "shut the f--k up" about their concerns over the government's maternal health initiative.

I have never trusted anyone who has told me to keep quiet, particularly in such a rude way. Women throughout history have suffered by being made to shut the f--k up, or living within societies where their opinions and views are suppressed or not valued. No good has ever come from women being made or told to shut-up, and Senator Ruth should be very ashamed of this statement even if her comments were not meant for the general public to hear.

Perhaps she already knows how offensive her comments were.....it would explain this later statement made by her in regards to the shut the ef up.

"I'm not going to repeat them in front of microphones. You gotta be crazy."

If anything I hope this spurs Canadian women to speak even louder particularly when it come to health issues facing other women both in Canada, and abroad.

Liberal MP Dr. Carolyn Bennett said Ruth's comments shocked the room. Bennett said she thinks Ruth's advice exposes something the government has denied — that for those who speak out against the government, there will be repercussions.

Funding cuts are one example of a repercussion the groups fear.

But the activists say they won't be taking Ruth up on her suggestion to keep quiet. Katherine McDonald is executive director of Action Canada for Population and Development.

"The time to speak out is now. If we hadn't spoken out over the last three months, contraception would not be part of this initiative."

McDonald is referring to the government's reversal on its initial announcement that family planning would not be part of the maternal health plan.

Bennett echoed another panelist at the meeting, saying that women in the world didn't achieve what they have over the years by "shutting up."

Matthew -> Interesting! Thanks for the link. :) No matter whether the message is a warning or a threat she still comes off as a bully in my opinion, and laying low or shutting up never did anyone any good. If she knows something that she believes we the general public don't know and this is a warning of things to come than she should just come out and tell us.

Bully... or a warning from a person who normally wouldn't be a bully for the Reformcon Government she's forced to work with?

I have to agree with UOH on this one... something's rotten in the state of Ottawa... and Nancy Ruth seems like the LEAST likely senator to be jack-booting these issues...

She's was the first openly homosexual senator... she's from an Ontario Progressive Conservative family (who's apex looks like it was under Bill Davis)... appointed by Prime Minister Paul Martin... staunch defender of women's, LGTB, and basic human rights...

Still, if there *is* an ulterior motive to her statement, it was a poor execution of the plan.

As one of the commenters on UOH said, if she really wanted to make an impactful statement on the obvious pandering of the Reformcon's hard-right Christian base, she should cross the floor or at least, sit as an independent in the senate... and realise that the Reformcon's are NOT for her and never will be.

Matthew -> Have you heard of this Senator before today? Are you familiar with anything she has accomplished? No.

To most people who will not be overly familiar with her including myself her statement comes off like a bully. Sorry.

I agree with you that if this is a warning then make it clear. Renounce all ties to the Conservative Party (the PCs have not existed in a long time) and spell out exactly what she thinks will happen if these activists continue to vocally support safe clean abortions for women in the third world. If it is a warning make it clear for everyone to understand, not just those who already know and respect her.
